Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram these social media platforms may face a ban if they do not follow the new Government guideline. The last date to accept/implement the new guideline of government is 25may but still, none of these social media platforms including Whatsapp Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram has implemented the new guideline yet. Only the Koo, Twitter the Indian social media platforms have followed the new guidelines set by the government before the deadline of 25th MAY 2021. It is a very critical situation for social media companies because if they do not implement the new regulation of the government by 25 may, they will lose their status and protections as intermediaries and criminal activities are often taken against them as per the laws of India, Government has noted it in their statements. US companies in the country are asking for increasing the time to SIX months, to get a response from US Headquarters.
Fb ( Facebook ) will implement these new laws and regulations or not, a company Head noted in a statement, “We aim to implement with the laws, regulation, and provisions of the IT rules and continue to discuss it, more engagement with the government. Following the IT rules, we are working to implement operational processes and improve performances. Facebook remains dedicated to people’s to have freely and safely expressed themselves on our platform.
According to the new rules announced by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology ( MFITy ), the social media platforms will have to appoint agreement officers from India. The officer will overlook the complaints, control the content, and remove it if it is unacceptable. Such rules are not only relevant to social media platforms but also to OTT platforms.
The streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and others will have to appoint a complaint redressal officer based in India who will take care of the grievances and act on them in 15 days. The government has been of the view that social media platforms do not have a code of self-regulation. Therefore, it wants the companies to include people from various departments and form a committee to regulate the content.
The new rules also state that the commission will have the individual power to take action on complaints of the violation of codes.
